The multitude of self-celebratory awards by the media is getting to the point where it is idiotic. Isn’t it about time that we had an awards show for the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan or perhaps honoring people’s achievements in other walks of life. The MTV Movie Awards gave Tom Cruise a lifetime achievement award presented by his girlfriend of the moment Katie Holmes. You know her, the 26 year old girl Cruise, age 42, is so in love with that he was dancing on Oprah’s couch. Pictures(click here)

Is this world only about movie hype? You would think so from watching the MTV Movie Awards. The categories are as phoney as the show, the best kiss scene, the meanest girl etc. All pubescent teen things. The only thing that topped the award show in terms of being gauche was Eminem singing a raunchy rap ditty and grabbing his crotch over and over. I wonder why he doesn’t volunteer for duty somewhere positive. It might dissipate his fake heat. It was on cable and the young people are there in high expectation because they know it will be a lot more gross than a standard broadcast. MTV and the celebrities find it necessary to meet those expectations or chance disapointing the audience. Instead of leaders they become lap dogs.

The unnecessary award show (The Academy Awards covers the matter fully and professionally) was important to the movie industry and the music industry because it attracts the teenage and young adult demographic so financially crucial to the success of those industries. However the standards of the show were so low and the anything goes attitude is probably why those industries are in mortal fear of the Internet infringers and down loaders. Why should young people pay for the product of those degenerates? Even people as old as Dustin Hoffman will appear and accept an award and try to be cool for this group. Hoffman emulated Eminem in a funny way by grabbing his crotch. Host Jimmy Fallon and presenter Sandra Bullock got into the act by pawing each other a la Janet Jackson. Gross humor, if it is humor, seems to be the touchstone of the show. Entertainment now is committed to the bottom line rather than quality of content and artistic standards.

Its too bad we couldn’t have an awards show with all those celebrities presenting honors to people who actual achieve something in the real world like medicine, education, social work, law enforcement, the armed services, politics or the law. Instead of having young people see Eminem debase himself they could be inspired by real people. Thus having true acheivers to emulate in their future lives and careers. Is it any wonder the fringe right has found a political base that now dominates the political scene to the detriment of the rational moderates.

The moral fanatics of the right like Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority have Eminem’s raunchy lyrics and crotch grabbing and Fallon’s and Bullock’s tit and crotch play to point to as justification for regression to pre depression standards and Puritan moral laws. Bush’s recent judicial appointments will fulfill the dreams of Falwell and his ilk.

All this is to titillate a young audience so that the coffers of MTV, the movie industry and the music industry can be fully funded. Meanwhile men like Falwell will have more fuel to feed the flames of their empires built on bigotry. With The MTV Movie Awards to hold up as evidence of the degradation of American youth by the media will there ever be a balanced government. Rank pop media geared to the lowest and broadest taste is the new standard. Meanwhile men and woman die out of honor and duty in Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis with out recognition and other persons of achievement from all walks of real life go without notice and often with low monetary reward. They are the people who make this country go and the people those on the MTV Movie Awards show wouldn’t say I’m sorry to if they stepped on their foot in the street. Where is their award show.
